The Canada-Hungary Educational Foundation (Fondation éducative Canada-Hongrie) is a registered charity set up in 2005 to raise public awareness for Canada’s role in receiving Hungarian refugees in 1956/57 and to highlight their experiences and contributions to Canadian society. The Foundation’s goals are:

Recent Events
  • to assist in developing and implementing educational activities about the experiences and contributions of Hungarians; as well as promoting the value of refugee and immigrant movements to Canada generally;

  • to provide a forum for sharing information about events and activities taking place across Canada during the anniversary year 2006/07; See list of projects here.

  • with its members and special advisors, drawn from a cross-section of interested Canadians, to develop a longer-term commemorative project as a legacy to the refugees and the Canadians who received them. This may take the form of annual scholarships; an award in recognition of outstanding contribution; educational, cultural or business oriented exchanges (with a focus on young people); or any appropriate project recommended by the directors and advisors of the organization in fulfilment of its charitable objectives.

The Foundation invites individuals and organizations to provide it with information about projects and events that are being planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the 1956 refugees to Canada. We will add these to the website on an ongoing basis for everyone’s benefit.
